East Berlin, 1974. Hans Bronstein is nineteen years old. A year ago, his father has died, his mother had been dead long since. Hans now lives with Mr and Mrs Lepschitz and their daughter Martha – and reminisces the events of the past year. A year that has changed his life:
During the summer of 1973, Martha and Hans meet up secretly, in a little house outside the city. One day, the house, belonging to Hans’ father, is occupied by someone else. A man – who had been concentration camp guard during the war – is being held hostage by Hans’ father and two friends of his, all of them are survivors of Nazi concentration camps. They interrogate the man, they beat him up, they want a confession.
Hans confronts his father and emphasizes the competence of jurisdiction and the responsibility of authorities, which his father rejects. Arguing about justice and guilt, their positions grow more and more irreconcilable. Finally, the father accuses the son of siding with the enemy. And Hans...
